Singer Angeline Quinto made it to the worldwide trending topics in the microblogging site Twitter on Sunday shortly after she covered Jennifer Holliday’s “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” on “ASAP 2012.”
The stars of the Sunday variety show paid tribute to Filipino-Mexican-American singer Jessica Sanchez, who made it to the Top 2 of the hit American talent show “American Idol.”
Quinto, Jed Madela, Christian Bautista and Juris Fernandez sang the songs which Sanchez had performed on “Idol.”
Quinto, who reprised the "Dreamgirls" number, got mixed reviews from netizens.
Several viewers took to the Internet to express their dismay with how Quinto performed the song, adding that the singer was not able to live up to the momentum Sanchez created on the show.
“People r saying this to Angeline Quinto bcoz there s so much expctations to her! She s frnt of the line in ASAP and ths is wat she can give?” said @kiteplayer3.
As for @camillasaguin, she said: “I feel bad for Angeline Quinto she's trending worldwide because she sang And I am Telling You and she didn't do half as good as Jessica.”
“Angeline Quinto's rendition of "And I'm Telling You" is not all that. masyadong manipis ang boses, kulang sa emotion. ah basta,” said @danc_ER.
“Angeline quinto no doubt is a good singer but she needs to improve her speech (english),” @kath624 posted.
“Hahahah, no one can ever sing that song as good as jessica did! I'm sorry but that performance was a disaster!.. Seriously,” said Martin Dean Dumdum on Facebook.
Facebook user Donjie Soriano added: “AQ's version of And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going will definitely be compared to JS's, cos it was so perfectly done and really made an impact that if AQ was gonna do it, she better bring it or at least be at par.”
While some said Quinto’s rendition was not good enough, there were also people who thought otherwise.
Twitter user @iamrhovalLitao, for one, said Quinto’s performance deserved two thumbs up.
“Napa-NGANGA ako sa pag kanta ni @angelineQuinto ,Grabe Sobrang astig #TwoTumbsUp,” she said.
“Angeline Quinto nailed And I Am Telling You! Superb performance only from our own Pop Superstar! So proud of her! Woohoo!!!” added @iamlittlecherry.
@iheartlara also said: “WOOO! Pinabilib kami ni angeline.. Galing nya sobra! I'm so proud of her.”
Meanwhile, Jun Masayon on Facebook said this is exactly the reason why the country does not move forward.
“Our crab mentality is working again. And we are asking why the Philippines is not a progressive country?” he asked.
