He may currently be more active in mainstream television but actor Coco Martin said doing independent films will forever be in his heart.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News during the gala night of his Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival entry “Sta. Niña” at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) on Tuesday night, Martin said he is delighted to be back in the indie scene because a lot of fans still support him.
“Ngayon lang ako nakabalik at nakatapak muli sa CCP. Ang sarap ng feeling na sinusuportahan ako. Pagbaba ko, kinabahan ako at nanginig buong katawan ko, kasi sa mga nakaraang taon hindi ako naging active sa indie,” he said.
Martin’s co-star Alessandra de Rossi, meantime, said even she got overwhelmed by the number of people who flocked to the CCP Main Theater to watch “Sta. Niña.”
“Naloka ako pagpasok ko ang daming tao. Sabi ko ano ito, mainstream? Ikaw na ang may Coco Martin,” she beamed.
Martin also said he misses joining international film festivals.
“Malaki potential ng pelikula dito sa Cinemalaya. Sana kahit papano mapansin abroad. Ang sarap sa pakiramdam sa aming mga artista na nasa isa kang festival, iba 'yung premier night, iba 'yung mga competition,” he said.
Martin vowed this won’t be the last independent movie he will be doing.
Among the celebrities spotted in the gala night of “Sta. Niña” were Jake Cuenca, Shaina Magdayao, Aiko Melendez, Pops Fernandez, Joel Torre, Leo Martinez and Gretchen Baretto.
Veteran actress Susan Roces, who plays Martin’s grandmother in the top-rating series “Walang Hanggan,” was also present at the event to support Martin.
“Very supportive kami sa indie films. Ang mga unang indie films ay pinroduce ng mga artista, sina FPJ (Fernando Poe Jr.), Joseph (Estrada) at Dolphy. Sila ang nagsimula kung tutuusin ng indie na ayon sa panlasa nila na magugustuhan ng mga manonood,” she said.
