JM de Guzman Cinemalaya role already an award

JM de Guzman feels he has already won an award even before the opening of this year's Cinemalaya Philippine Independent FIlm Festival.

De Guzman, who topbills Cinemalaya entry "Intoy Syokoy ng Kalye Marino," said he is not expecting to be recognized with an award at the annual filmfest. According to him, being the titular character in the film is already an award in itself.

"Hindi po ako nage-expect ng award, pero I'm very proud of this movie. I'm very proud na ako 'yung kinuhang Intoy Syokoy. 'Pag napanood niyo po, the best. 'Yun na 'yung award sa'kin. Fulfilled na ako na marami akong natutunan," de Guzman told reporters during a press conference for the film on Thursday.

The young actor, who is starring in a Cinemalaya film for a fourth time in a row, said being part of independent films has helped him improve as an actor. Compared to his earlier years in the entertainment industry, de Guzman said he has also become more professional.

"Hindi lang sa pagpapahusay kundi kung paano magtrabaho -- mas patient, mas grateful na binibigyan parin ako ng shows. Mas focused ako ngayon. Nako-compare ko kung paano ako magtrabaho noon. Before, nahahaluan ko pa ng enjoy, party-party," de Guzman said.

Mainstream vs indie

Having made his supporting role debut in ABS-CBN series "The Substitute Bride" in 2010, de Guzman now topbills his own afternoon soap opera, "Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto."

De Guzman enjoys the best of both worlds -- indie films and mainstream starrers -- but the actor admitted that the former leaves more room to be more experimental, to "make mistakes."

"Dito mas prone ka to make mistakes, kasi sa TV parang limitado nalang tayo, 'yung pwede nating gawin. So dito, pwedeng magkalat, and at the same time you learn from it," de Guzman said.

In his latest indie film "Intoy Syokoy," directed by Lem Lorca, de Guzman portrays the titular character -- a "tahong" diver who falls in love with a prostitute.

"Makikita dito kung paano pinaglaban ng isang mananahong na diver 'yung love niya na prostiute na babae. Simple na love story, pero dito mararamdaman kung paano talaga 'yung pagmamahal na 'yun," de Guzman said.

Also starring LJ Reyes, Joross Gamboa, Arnold Reyes and Kenneth Salva, "Intoy Syokoy" is part of the New Breed Full Length category of Cinemalaya.

Now on its eighth year, Cinemalaya will premiere 25 film entries starting July 20-29 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Ayala Cinemas in Greenbelt Makati and Trinoma Quezon City.
