The city of Rodolfo Vera Quizon's birth has ordered its government offices to fly flags at half mast to mark the passing of its famous son, Comedy King Dolphy.
In a memorandum shared by Manila City Mayor Alfredo Lim on his Twitter account Wednesday, all government offices in the city were ordered to display the Philippine flag at half mast for Dolphy, whom the city honored with a "Gawad Diwa ng Lahi" award at its 441st foundation day in June.
The award was given in recognition of the honor that Dolphy brought to the city as an actor and comedian "on stage, radio, television and film", the citation given to Dolphy on June 22 said.
Dolphy was born in Tondo, Manila in 1928 and sold peanuts and other snacks in Manila's theaters when he was young. He got his first break on stage in Manila, as a chorus dancer at the Avenue and Lyric theaters.
"(I) can't describe the sadness about pareng Dolphy's passing, the loss of a true friend I've had since I was a patrolman and he as a theater actor at Orient. Dolphy and I may have pursued different careers but the friendship and closeness stayed," Lim said Tuesday night when news of Dolphy's passing broke.
Quezon City, which calls itself "the City of the Stars" and has former actor-comedian Herbert Bautista as mayor, has yet to issue an order to fly flags at half mast, the mayor's office told Yahoo! Southeast Asia.
