Sharon Cuneta Sinaving si Dolphy ay isang National Treasure

The question on whether or not Dolphy will finally get the National Artist award may still be hanging in the air.   But for Kapatid star Sharon Cuneta, the King of Philippine Comedy is already much more than a National Artist.

“Ang daming pwedeng maging National Artist. Hindi ko alam kung ibibigay pa sa kanya. Ang alam ko lang kung hindi nila ibigay dahil si tito Dolphy, national treasure. Treasure!” she said in her eulogy during the necrological service held by TV5 for Rodolfo Quizon Sr. at the Heritage Memorial Park Chapel on Thursday, July 12.

The Megastar added Dolphy has already accomplished so much in the entertainment industry.

“Ilang poste na rin ang tinayo niya sa mga TV stations. Ilang poste ang tinayo niya sa ABS-CBN. Siguro kahit nanghihina na siya at kinuha pa siya ng TV5, may poste pa rin siyang naiwan dun dahil tinayuan siya ng poste ng istasyon namin.”

Sharon and Dolphy never worked on a movie together—a fact she regrets—but the actress is very close to the Quizon family. Zsa Zsa Padilla, Dolphy’s long-time partner, is godmother of Sharon’s daughter KC Concepcion. Sharon adds that she’s the godmother of Zia Quizon, Zsa Zsa and Dolphy's daughter.

True love

“Parang ako na po ang magpipilit at magsisiksik sa pamilya nila na maging extra Quizon, tutal naman maraming anak ang tatay ninyo,” she quipped.

Sharon also recalled the love story of Dolphy and Zsa Zsa.

“Naalala ko po noon, si tito Dolphy, maraming humusga, pero dahil sa pagmamahal niya kay Zsa Zsa, he left with only the clothes on his back because Zsa Zsa is his true love.”

He welcomed TV5

TV5’s necrological service on the second day of Dolphy’s wake came on the heels of ABS-CBN’s tribute to the Comedy King . It was held at the Dolphy Theater on Wednesday, July 11.

The Kapatid network served as Dolphy’s home for the last two years of his career as a television star. As  Kapatid talent, the Comedy King starred in the weekly fantasy-comedy show “Pidol’s Wonderland.” TV5 also aired a two-hour special titled “Talentadong Pidol” for Dolphy during his birthday last year.

But TV5 chairman Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) said it was Dolphy who welcomed TV5 into his family and not the other way around.

“Three years ago, we welcomed Mang Dolphy as our Kapatid. But the truth is quite opposite. He welcomed us.”

Pangilinan added, “Saying that he’s already a Kapatid meant a lot to all of  us because he welcomed us not only to his own family but to the larger entertainment industry that holds him with great affection and respect.”

MVP thanked Dolphy for playing Jesus Gonzales in the movie “Rosario,” for which he won a Best Supporting Actor award at the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival.

The businessman described Dolphy as an “exceptional Filipino” and a “kind and generous man.”

An inspiration

For Kapatid star Willie Revillame, Dolphy is a medicine that cures sadness and a hero for those with problems.

“Isa (siyang) taong simple pero ang kaligayahan ay magpasaya,” the Wil Time Big Time host said.

Willie called Dolphy a true genius, adding that no one in the entertainment industry could replace him. Willie added that he consulted Dolphy during the more tiring parts of his life. Willie said he did the same for Dolphy.

“Tito Dolphy, ikaw ang aming inspirasyon. Mahal na mahal ka ng sambayanan. Andito kaming lahat na nagmamahal sa iyo,” he ended his eulogy.

Kapuso actress Claudine, on the other hand, said she considered it an honor to have worked with Dolphy. Claudine played one of Dolphy’s children in the ABS-CBN sitcom “Home Along Da Riles.”

“Marami akong natutunan sa kanya na buong buhay kong dadalhin at buong buhay akong magpapasalamat sa kanya,” she said. “From him I learned not to be a show-off in this business. To have no pretenses, no fanfare, no gimmicks. Totoong tao ang tatay ko at tunay siyang makatao ang tatay ko.”

Giving respect

Eddie Gutierrez (who attended the service with Annabelle Rama), director Kitchie Benedicto, and German Moreno also gave tributes to Dolphy.

Comedian Long Mejia credited Dolphy for his career in comedy.

Meanwhile Nino Muhlach, who starred with Dolphy in movies such as “Ang Tatay Kong Nanay,” said the late esteemed comedian served as a father figure long after their movies ended.

Other Kapatid stars present during the service were Sharon Cuneta, Lorna Tolentino, Amy Perez, Edu Manzano, BB Gandanghari, Jay Manalo, Miriam Quiambao, Aga Muhlach (with Charlene Gonzales and their children Andres and Atasha), and Lucy Torres. Ryan

Kapamilya stars Billy Crawford, Nikki Gil, Judy Ann Santos and Sarah Geronimo and Kapuso stars Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez, Raymart Santiago and Michael V. also attended the service.

Public viewing of Dolphy’s remains is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig City from July 13 to 14.
