Denise Laurel wants to try indie

As grateful as Denise Laurel is over her TV projects, the “Pintada” actress reveals she wants to try new challenges, particularly an independent film.

“It’s been years! I’ve been trying to look for the perfect script; I’ve been waiting for people to ask me,” she told Yahoo! OMG! Philippines at the launch of Colt 45’s new triple hops formula at Outback in Glorietta 4 last August 22.

Denise shared that she’s always been envious of Sid Lucero’s indie film projects.

“One of my bestest friends in the whole wide world is Sid Lucero, and we’ve been best friends for the past eight years now and I get so inggit every time I see him do indie film after indie film—‘Selda,’ and now he’s doing ‘Death March.”

Out-of-the-box

“For me, I just wanna do something out-of-the-box, for once. I mean there’s nothing wrong with what I’m doing now, it’s just equally a challenge. Doing TV is intense… The character that I’m playing now is so layered, so much stuff has happened to her, and even before bad things happened to her, she’s (already) gone through so much. And in one look you’re supposed to show that depth,” Denise adds.

And while the characters she plays are either too nasty or really nice, Denise radiates a rare “realness” that is very natural. She’s neither bitchy nor too nice. Nor does she want to be pigeonholed into these roles.

“I just wanna play something that you expect,” she says, adding that a deglamorized role could be nice, or an action film.

Is she worried about crossing over to the indie side?

New isn’t scary

“New isn’t necessarily always scary. Becoming a mom, that was a big thing that I had to share with people—that something new, or something unexpected isn’t necessarily something bad or scary. If it’s something that you want, then you work on it,” Denise replies.

As for her requirements, Denise points out, “I just can’t do nude. I can’t show booby, and I can’t show booty, that’s it!”
