"Running Happy" with Jennylyn Mercado

Just like most people getting into sports, Jennylyn Mercado’s motivation is “pumayat.”

At the launch of Brooks, her latest endorsement, she relates, “Gaining so much, sobra 'kong big...

"Alam ng lahat na nanganak na 'ko, may baby na 'ko so yung being [a] mommy, andiyan na namanas ako, yung fats... I mean sobra-sobrang bigat ko nun... Nag-gain ako ng sobrang weight.

“And then 'yon, I decided to train...

"Dun talaga bumalik yung dati kong weight. In fact, mas payat ako ngayon, mas lighter ako ngayon sa dati kong weight."

WHY RUNNING? It’s the cheapest way to lose weight. No membership fee required. No payment needed for every session.

“Unang-una, that's the most basic. Kasi pag sinabi mong cardio, ang dami mong puwedeng gawin, pero yung running puwede mong gawin kahit saan.

"Puwede sa village mo, sa subdivision, sa gym puwede kang mag-treadmill, yun yung pinaka-basic..."

70.3 Ironman top Filipino finisher August Benedicto, also a Brooks ambassador, adds, “Rubber shoes lang kelangan at saka tatakbuhan, okay na…”

And of course, as Jen puts it, "Nakakapayat talaga."

She resumes, “It’s also a good way of toning my muscles. Iba kasi yung payat sa healthy…

"Siyempre, kelangan ng oras at disiplina, pero ang resulta, kung dedicated ka, mabilis... mabilis kang papayat.”

WHY BROOKS? One can run anytime and anywhere, but one advice that Jennylyn underlines, “Pumili ka ng komportableng shoes. Yun yung very important...

"Kasi kapag nagra-run ka, very important kasi na nakakatagal ka talaga lalo na sa mahabang-mahabang training.

"Yung pinaka-importante, comfort, yung makakatagal ka."

During the event, Rod Claudio, whose family brought Brooks to the Philippines, says, “Running is much more than one foot being ahead of the other.”

His son Toby, who owns Toby’s Arena, adds, “The basic thing to ask yourself if you are to take running seriously, ‘What type of runner am I?’”

The brand’s “first concept store in Southeast Asia,” which is situated at the third level of SM Annex, has a “running lab.”

Before buying a new pair or shoes, the customers are encouraged to know their foot type and stride using a footprint scanner and a “high-speed video gait analysis.”

Toby says, “Picking the right shoe is important to avoid injury.”

Jennylyn picked "Pure Flow" for herself because "it's very light, hindi siya mabigat sa training, comfortabale, and yung technology, di ba."

For the latter, she was referring to the "DNA," which was defined by the brand's website as, "custom cushioning for runners of all types and sizes."

The sole, aside from it being light, "responds to the amount of force placed on the foot and disperses the pressure, providing just the right amount of resiliency."

Jennylyn throws in, “At siyempre, pag komportable ka, you run faster and perform better kasi tinutulungan ka ng shoes.”

And that helps a lot in achieving most runner's objective: Run happy!
