Toni Gonzaga todo sa public service

Television host and actress Toni Gonzaga took some time off from her showbiz commitments to help clean up the Maningning Creek in her hometown of Taytay, Rizal.

Speaking on ABS-CBN’s Current Affairs show “Ako Ang Simula,” Gonzaga said the situation in Maningning Creek in Barangay Sta. An, Taytay was an eye-opener for her considering that the clean-up drive was set off by a youth ogranization.

“Lumaki ako dito sa Taytay at nadadaanan ko itong Sta. Ana... I was so surprised na ang mga kabataan ang nag-organize at nagsimula ng proyektong ito,” she said.

Gonzaga was referring to the Angat Kabataan youth group, which, she said, convinced the authorities to make an effort in cleaning the creek.

Gonzaga and the rest of the volunteers used recycled materials from vulcanizing shops as an innovative way of cleaning the creek.

According to Tobit Cruz, co-founder of Angat Kabataan, they initiated this effort because their environment reflects the kind of community they live in.

“Kasi nakita po namin na ang creek ay reflection din ng society namin. So kapag madumi ang creek, it reflects 'yung attitude ng mga tao sa paligid nito. We wanted to be a reflection na this community is doing something for the environment so kapag nalinis siguro ito, magiging magandang image din po iyon para sa mga nakatira,” he said.

As a result of their collective efforts, the residents of Barangay Sta. Ana are now aware of the importance of maintaining the cleanliness in the area.

“Nakita naman po namin na may pagbabago kaya lalo pong naengganyo ang mga tao,” said Cruz.

According to Gonzaga, she is honored to be part of a community that does something to keep the environment clean and green.
