Richard Gutierrez takes extra care of his body by taking vitamins daily

Unlike the contestants on GMA-7's reality game show Extra Challenge, Richard Gutierrez can be considered a lucky bloke to be hosting the show.

While others are made to fulfill the show's tasks— all physically, mentally and emotionally demanding— he stands on the sidelines and simply watches.

However, he clarified in a chat with Hot Pinoy Showbiz, "Hindi rin kami puwedeng magpakampante.

"Kasi in the event na may mag-back out sa contestants, kami ni Marian [Rivera] ang sasalo."

Richard co-hosts the show with actress Marian Rivera, who was also present at the show's press launch, held October 18, where the actor was interviewed.

He describes his hosting partner, and former My Bestfriend's Girlfriend co-star as "palaban."

"Game din si Yan [Marian's nickname] sa mga challenges. Magugulat kayo," he says, noting that the CaviteƱa beauty is not only "matapang" when facing showbiz intrigues, she takes on physical ordeals as well.

Richard says that even though he considers himself tough and athletic, he still finds the show's games very challenging.

"Ang daming challenges na sobrang mahirap. Meron diyan iyong mga heights.

"I'm not saying na hindi ko kaya or nakakatakot. Kaya siya, pero challenging talaga.

"Kaya iyon talaga dapat din naming paghandaan."

STAYING IN SHAPE. Given the show's demands, Richard needs to keep his body agile and in shape—not only to prepare for possible challenges, but simply to stay generally healthy and fit.

One of the toughest aspects of shooting a reality game show is having to travel constantly from one location to another.

"So far sa Subic pa lang ang napuntahan namin," Richard says.

"But hopefully makaikot din kami sa buong Pilipinas para naman makasama din namin iyong ibang mga Kapuso natin doon.

"Pero sa ngayon, mga near Metro Manila lang muna din talaga para hindi naman masyadong mahirap para sa mga production [staff and crew], saka sa mga artista na maglalaro."

Richard is quite used to traveling, as he has previously hosted shows like Pinoy Adventures and Survivor Philippines, which were shot outside the city.

To keep up his physical energy, he eats three full meals everyday, plus some snacks, and supplements it with energy boosters and vitamins.

"I take vitamins. Iyon talaga.

"And then kapag may free time, doon naman ako nagdyi-gym or nagba-basketball."

For Extra Challenge, Richard gets at least three days off, so he uses that time to catch up on his workouts.

"Nag-train din kasi ako for triathlon, e, plus Muay Thai and other physical activities, so may exercise naman.

"Siyempre, I rest din, kasi siyempre iyong trabaho namin madalas inaabot ng late hours, so we really need to recover din."
